The Towans
UPTON TOWANS
With acres of sandy dunes and a steep hill down onto Gwithian beach, this is a haven for your four legged friend. Large open areas where they can run around off lead, without the worry of cliff edges. There are plenty of paths carved through the dunes, or you can wade through the Ammophila breviligulata grass and carve your own path. If the dunes isn’t enough, you can make quick haste to the beach that lays below to which is Gwithian beach, south end. Although this access use to be limited during the summer term for dog owners, recently it has changed allowing your four legged friends to run riot on the south end of the beach, as for the North side is strictly no dogs permitted. I think that’s pretty fair as Gwithian beach sands across two miles of sand.
WORDS OF WARNING
Although the dunes is a relatively large area that is dog friendly, please be aware that there are other dogs in the area so if your dog gets nervous around other or shows any sign of aggression, please keep them on the lead as it is easy for them to run out of sight and potentially bump into other walkers. Same again on recall, if you find that you’re not 100% confident on your dogs recall, then a long training lead may be advisable as it’s very easy for them to get lost, especially if you’ve not been down there before.
During the summer months, due to hot weather there are adders that roam around the dunes so I would advise that staying to the path is essential, although adders are not harmful for us humans they can be deadly to your dogs. The best time to visit the dunes is when it has quietened down, this is usually later in the evening when it’s cooler for your pups to walk.
